JANUARY 17 UPDATE: Three in a row was too good to be true. EMPO Sinfónico was just postponed to March 13.
For those of us that enjoy the occasional Guadalajara trip to enjoy symphonic music, the stars have aligned for the first weekend in February, with a great combination of opera, electronic music and Beethoven.
On Friday, January 31 at 9 pm, Teatro Diana will present EMPO Sinfónico, featuring some of electronic music’s top hits by artists such as Robert Miles, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto and others, arranged for a 50+-piece orchestra. There are not many specifics in the program description, but this seems to be a touring company from Mexico City that comprises professional musicians, who have put together a comprehensive audiovisual performance.
The following day, February 1 at 11:55 am, Teatro Diana presents The Metropolitan Opera’s stunning new production of The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, broadcast live from Lincoln Center. The production has been favorably received by the New York Times.
Last but not least, the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra has finally announced its first 2020 season, which opens with an all-Beethoven program on Thursday, January 30 at 8 pm, and Sunday, February 2 at 12:30 pm. The orchestra will perform Leonora Overture No.3, Op.72b, Piano Concerto No. 5 in E♭ major, Op. 73, popularly known as the Emperor Concerto, and the popular Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67. This means you can start a glorious weekend of symphonic music with the Thursday night performance, or cap it with the Sunday matinee!
The Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra continues with its first season of the year until April with a total of nine programs presented Thursday evenings and Sunday matinees. To see the entire schedule along with works to be performed visit their website.
Tickets for all performances are available online, but if you are in Puerto Vallarta and are a stickler when it comes to the precise seats you wish to purchase, it is worth paying a visit to the local Ticketmaster office, located at Liverpool in Galerías Vallarta.
Am I going to Guadalajara that weekend? You bet I am, along with a handful of Puerto Vallarta friends! If you are planning on attending any of these performances, feel free to leave a comment, below!
