Music Appreciation Lectures by Paco Ojeda Return

I am thrilled to announce that I am bringing back my music appreciation lectures, this time around thanks to a fruitful collaboration with IAMPV, the new Puerto Vallarta music school. In a previous article written for Vallarta Tribune, I wrote in detail about the music school and its programs, so if you’d like to learn more about it, you can always read the article again.

A Bit of History…

Back in 2013, Teatro Vallarta had agreed to screen the Metropolitan Opera Company’s live Saturday matinee performances after a fair amount of grassroots lobbying by a small but persistent number of anglophone locals. To help entice audiences to attend and save myself the admission price (I’d seen it done elsewhere) I decided to begin short, introductory lectures in English and Spanish prior to every opera. When Teatro Vallarta abruptly shut down the screenings, I morphed the lectures into “edutainment” presentations in English at The Palm Cabaret & Bar, Incanto and The Boutique Community Theatre, featuring guests that would perform live music to complement the presentations. A parallel series of music appreciation lectures in Spanish was also presented at Los Mangos Public Library.

Six years later, I’m proud to have produced and presented over 60 music appreciation events at the aforementioned venues, in a broad variety of topics, with the goal to help people appreciate the difference between ordinary and extraordinary music.

The New Lecture Series

Thanks to an agreement with IAMPV Founding Director, Daniel Oliveros, the new lecture series will be presented at the IAMPV campus at the Guadalajara University’s Estación Gourmet Cooking School on Francisco Villa Ave. The lectures will be presented in a classroom setting and will take place once a month on the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM, beginning November 21. Each lecture will be approximately 90 minutes in length. Admission to the lectures will be $50 pesos per person.

But There’s a Catch!

While the lectures are open to the public, their primary focus is to contribute to the academic programs at IAMPV. As such, they will be presented in Spanish. That said, there is a sizable community of English-speaking folks that are part of the IAMPV community, and I’m thrilled to have a fair amount of English-speaking followers that have attended my lectures in the past. So I am eager and prepared to present the same lecture in English and Spanish on different evenings, should there be enough interest. Simply let us know by answering the following question:

November’s Topic

If your Spanish chops are good, you are welcome to attend November’s lecture, titled Música Espacial e Historia de la Música en el Cine, (or Space Music and Brief History of Film Music). The lecture will take place at IAMPV’s campus on Thursday November 21 at 6:30 PM. If you show up and don’t speak Spanish, I promise to hold your hand, musically, so you can at least get the gist of it!

Hope to see you there! And if you’ve never been to IAMPV, here is a video showing you where it is and how to get in.
