MUSIC MONDAY: El Triste, by Roberto Cantoral

Today we unpacked a quintessential Mexican power ballad about the sudden and unexpected loss of love.

WATCH: the original March 25, 1970 performance at Teatro Ferrocarrilero that catapulted José José into stardom. Pay attention to his phrasing and breathing, the astounded reactions of the audience and everyone’s reaction after the song ended.

LISTEN: to the studio recording of the song, created shortly after the competition where it was premiered, using exactly the same musical arrangement as the live version. Pay attention to the dynamics of the song, and how it slowly builds momentum through the verses until reaching the powerful choruses. Also, notice how it ends with a major chord, a ‘happy ending.’

WATCH: the meticulous recreation of the original 1970 performance for the 2018 miniseries about José José’s life produced by Telemundo. José José, who was 70 at the time, makes a touching appearance at the beginning reflecting on how his career started at that same spot.
