Check out our very incomplete—but improved upon on a regular basis—list of intentions compiled by the Coffee & Headlines community on things to do, places to go, food to sample and much more that will make your more connected to your Puerto Vallarta surroundings! For your convenience, we’ve organized the intentions into four broad categories. If you have others to share, feel free to do so by contacting us!


  • Attend a quinceañera
  • Attend the lucha libre
  • Attend a posada
  • Attend a charreada
  • Win the baby Jesus from the Rosca de Reyes and deliver on the tamales
  • Sharpen your kitchen knives with the guy who goes around on a bike with a whistle
  • Learn the legend of Our Lady of Guadalupe
  • Learn your language basics
  • Absorb!


  • Eat tacos de canasta
  • Peel your own prickly pear
  • Eat grasshoppers
  • Eat chiles en nogada
  • Eat cactus salad
  • Eat pozole
  • Eat!


  • Call neighborhoods by what they are
  • Walk the Isla Río Cuale from tip to tip
  • Go up to the second story at City Hall to view the Manuel Lepe mural
  • Walk up to the old lighthouse on Matamoros St.
  • Shop at any of the city’s municipal markets
  • Shop at a tianguis
  • Get your Jalisco state driver’s license
  • Learn the name of the people that run your corner shop
  • Go shopping using only the local bus for transportation
  • Walk!


  • Have a close encounter with an iguana or garrobo
  • Tell the difference between an iguana and a garrobo
  • Adopt a local dog or cat or help transport a rescued animal to its new home
  • Help a turtle hatchling find its way
  • Go whale watching 
  • Explore!
