YouTube Finds of the Week

As a self-confessed YouTube fan, I love both searching for specific videos on the platform, but also enjoying the suggestions thrown at my by its own algorithms. This was a great week, indeed:

The Making of 10cc’s “I’m Not in Love”

Having studied music production and engineering in college and having spent a fair amount of time in the recording studio, I’ve always been in awe of the amazing processes that must go into place in the most creative way possible to produce a hit song. Often times I’ve fantasized about what it might have been like to sit in a corner of the recording studio while specific songs were being recorded. “I’m Not in Love,” the one-of-a-kind 1975 pop hit by the English group 10cc is quite probably at the top of that list, as it is mostly comprised of the band’s multitracked vocals. Other pop bands (The Carpenters come to mind) became successful for their trademark multilayered background vocals, but there has never been anything quite like this particular song, even when Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is perhaps much better known and was dramatized to some success in Freddy Mercury’s 2018 eponymous biopic.

Here we have the original 10cc band members sharing insight about their process, along with the entire track at the end of the video. If you don’t know it, grab your headphones, watch the intro, then close your eyes and relax.

The Carol Burnett Show Official

Here is not a video, but an entire channel devoted to one of the most successful US variety shows of all time. Starring Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner, The Carol Burnett Show ran from 1967 to 1978. This was not quite before my time (I remember my parents watching it) but I definitely didn’t come to appreciate the performers’ particular comedic style until I became an adult. Ranked by TV Guide as number 17 on its list of the 60 Greatest Shows of All Time, this is a great show to watch for anybody who appreciates seasoned comedians not only thriving at making a live audience crack at their jokes, but also challenging one another to stay on character (the bloopers are magnificent!). The guest star list is endless and it is quite difficult to come up with a definitive list of top sketches. Here’s one of my favorites:
