Hotel Mar y Sol, Rincón de Guayabitos

Originally developed as a vacation destination for middle-class Mexican families, Rincón de Guayabitos, in Riviera Nayarit, is also a preferred destination for an increasing number of budget-conscious tourists from the United States and Canada looking to get the best bang for their getaway buck. Curiously enough, there are probably more hotels per mile in this small town, located only 70 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, than anywhere else in Banderas Bay. And this is not surprising, for the gentle surf and wide sandy beach stretch at this location are ideal for families and small children, not to mention those who enjoy walking along the beach for miles and miles. Many of these hotels share similar amenities. However, I very much enjoyed Hotel Mary Y Sol, which was recommended by a friend.

Here is a view of one of the suites:

And this is what the pool looks like:

The hotel features several types of rooms, from your basic two-beed variety to larger suites with kitchen, refrigerator and other amenities, such as the one featured on the 360 panoramic image, which also has a nice porch overlooking the pool area. All rooms feature cable-tv and surprisingly enough, this budget hotel also offers wireless internet, a favorite feature of mine. And while it’s not located right on the beach, it’s only 1/2 block away from the nearest public beach access (see 360) such that it will barely make a difference if you wish to keep your feet close to the sand and surf.

Mar y Sol also features its own restaurant, Los Tulipanes, which aside from offering extremely affordable Mexican-style meals, it also has a breakfast buffet with everything from healthy, fresh fruit to traditional chilaquiles and other typical dishes.

And when it’s time to go to the beach:
